The Porn Generation… Empowerment or Suppression?

November 7, 2016 @ 11:00 am - 12:00 pm

$35

There is no question that pornography is everywhere, and that it is more accessible, graphic and extreme than it has ever been.  The average age of boys first porn consumption is getting younger and younger as access to internet sites such as pornhub gets easier, with recent reports citing 11-13 being the norm. Even mainstream music videos from the likes of Nicki Minaj and Rihanna are presenting hypersexualised imagery and pornographic themes (view the Anaconda music video here for a blatant example:).

What effect does this have on young people and their expectations of sex and relationships, and how is this playing out in our society?  Is the way women are being portrayed, both in pornography and mainstream media, empowering women, or merely continuing our objectification? Come and join this open and frank conversation with Laura McNally about all things porn, and about the things you need to be talking about with the young people in your life.

Laura McNally is a registered psychologist and author, with a focus on pop culture from a feminist perspective.  As a young woman, she is particularly perturbed by the rise of porn, its link to sexual violence in young people, and its effects on attitudes towards women.
